Company History

During the 1970s and 1980s Weston Geophysical Corporation was primarily involved in geotechnical surveys and seismic hazard studies around nuclear power plant sites. During the 1990s the company was purchased by Geophex, Ltd., a company based in North Carolina. In 2000 Jim Lewkowicz purchased a portion of the business from Geophex and moved the new company's headquarters to Lexington, Massachusetts. The geophysical survey services division remains at Geophex and is now known as Weston Geophysical Engineers, Inc.

Our Capabilities

Weston performs research primarily in the field of seismic monitoring for underground nuclear tests. This includes work in detection, location, and characterization of small seismic events around the world. Some of the company's specific fields of expertise include

  • Regional surface-wave magnitudes and discriminants
  • Development of seismic velocity models of the crust and upper mantle
  • Coda-based magnitudes
  • Array-based signal processing for improved phase characterization
  • Field deployments to study source phenomenology
  • Accurate seismic event detection, location and characterization at scales from the reservoir (microseismic) to global (teleseismic)
